Never before has it been so good to be a movie buff. Back in the day the only way that you could even see a motion picture was to visit the theater. Later on, videos came out and you could get a video at the store but the film that you wanted may have been out-of-stock and you still had to wait. You also needed to make sure that you avoided any late fees by making sure that you got the movie back to the store on time. Now you can get the movies by mail, but it is still a waiting game.
The Prince and the Showgirl – Reasonably good but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the’11 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with commendable performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes,’57)
Clue – Silly and insipid thriller based on the popular board game of the same name with all the familiar characters Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Red, et al. gathered for a murderous day in a Victorian mansion. Everyone tries tremendously hard but there is nothing they can do to save this weak film. Cast includes Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Ponder, and Howard Hesseman. (87 minutes,’85)
The Accidental Tourist – This film tells the narrative of Macon Leary, who is listless after the loss of his son. This is compounded further when his wife decides to leave him because he will not snap out of it. With a divorce pending he finds himself mixed up with a new woman, who is helping bring him back to life. Now his wife decides to have him back, and he is faced with more tough questions. William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Geena Davis, Amy Wright, and Bill Pullman star. (1988 Drama)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Here is a romantic comedy set in a scenic resort in Hawaii. After being dumped by his girlfriend Sarah, he at last decides to go to Hawaii to get over the loss. Unfortunately, when he goes to check in at the resort, the first person he sees is Sarah, and of course her new boyfriend.
Far and Away – A scrappy Irish occupant farmer hooks up, in doubtful style, with the equally lively daughter of a prosperous landowner, and together they journey to America to seek out their final fate in the’93 Oklahoma land rush. Excellent platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both beautiful and involving; the trouble is a drastic absence of decent dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes,’92)
Above the Law – This is Steven Segal’s breakout movie. He plays a Chicago Cop who takes matters into his own hands. As the title implies, he is ‘above the law’. He uses his large body and martial arts skills to cause disorder on the bad guys. Stars include Steven Segal, Pam Grier, and Sharon Stone. (1988 Action)
